We have many names for the 'things' we engage in to help us mature in the Christian faith--prayer, Bible reading, retreats, seeking guidance from another, developing Christian virtues, etc. Some refer to them as spiritual disciplines because, and let's be honest, it takes a lot discipline to engage in any one of them on a regular and consistent basis. Others refer to them as spiritual exercises (St Ignatius of Loyola's favorite term) because they are exercises to be practiced in order to be more Jesus-like in the world. I like spiritual practices, because each one takes practice, lots of it. We fail and so we try again and again, getting better bit by bit.
On this link, I focus on the spiritual practices of retreating and spiritual direction.
Click on 'engaging scripture' for more on the spiritual practice of reading scripture in order to experience an encounter with the Living Lord Jesus Christ and to be transformed as a result. And may you be blessed as you do.
