The ART of ENGAGING with SCRIPTURE
The very otherness of the Bible makes reading and understanding
it a tricky business.
The very otherness of the Bible makes reading and understanding it a tricky business. The distance, in both time and culture of the Bible from our time today makes it almost totally foreign to readers today. As a result, we either neglect reading it or stick with reading only our favorite bits. We need help in reading this ancient and wonderful Text and encouragement to keep on reading it. Storymakers is a way to engage Scripture, especially its many stories, in order to experience meaningful encounters with the Living Lord who still speaks his Word to us today. The practice of Storymakers is a simple yet profound approach to Scripture that can be used together in a small group or alone in solitude.
Those who practice Storymakers as the art of engaging Scripture aren’t required to be well versed in the Bible and its various methods of interpretation. They merely need to be willing to submit to the Spirit of Jesus as they carefully observe a passage, paying attention to details, and then wondering about meaning and imagining their own encounter with Jesus in a Bible story. The primary goal of Storymakers is formation rather than information.
To understand the way of Storymakers read:
“Reading the Bible together for all its worth” for a comprehensive explanation of the group practice of 'storymakers' through five distinct movements.
“Reading the Bible for all you’re worth” explains the popular spiritual discipline of lectio divina (reading Scripture prayerfully). Lectio is central to the practice of Storymakers as an art of engaging Scripture.
