Prepare to listen. Light the pink candle. Take a moment to be still and silent, then pray: Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid. (Isaiah 12:2)
Read: Isaiah 12:2-6
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid, for the LORD God is my strength and my might; he has become my salvation. 3With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. 4And you will say on that day: Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known his deeds among the nations; proclaim that his name is exalted. 5Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be known in all the earth. 6Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.
‘With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.’ These are the prophet’s confident words to a people struggling under oppressive dictators. He is confident that things will, in time to come, be happily resolved and in the meantime, he invites the people to joyfully draw water, all they need for life now, from the wells of salvation. The prophet has experienced this salvation, he’s drunk from the wells, and knows that it banishes fear, giving instead a calm (joyful) trust in the Lord God. I think in this present day, with so many leaders creating fear in order to get our votes, we need to draw water with joy from the wells of salvation that belong to the Sovereign Lord, Ruler of the Universe.
Spend time with whatever connected with you in this wonderful passage.
Go to the ‘wells of salvation,’ and joyfully draw life-sustaining, fear-abolishing water. And if you don’t feel joyful, sing and shout with joy anyway.
Respond to Jesus in prayer
Sovereign Lord, I need to joyfully draw from your wells of salvation. Help me trust fully in you and resist the fear-mongering around me. Amen.
Go and live obediently in the world and keep drawing water with joy.
