Prepare to listen. Light the 2nd purple candle. Be still and pray, Guide my feet today into the way of peace. (From Luke 1:79)
Read: Philippians 1:8-11
8For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. 9And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight 10to help you to determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.
Love is a powerful force and thus it’s not surprising that it’s often misunderstood, degenerating into what N. T. Wright refers to as “undisciplined squads of emotion.” This isn’t the kind of love Paul prays the church in Philippi will have and experience. The love he desires for them is one overflowing more and more with ‘knowledge and full insight.’ The mind is fully engaged with the heart in this kind of love. It is, as Wright maintains, “a thought-out habit of the heart—the heart knowing why it approves what it approves and why it disapproves what it disapproves” (Wright, After you Believe. 2010, p. 157). Mind and heart united in wholesight ‘to determine what is best.’ This is the love Jesus gave to us so that we reach the goal of becoming perfect, complete, pure and blameless—in love.
It takes love to get there. Love for God, love for others, love for yourself, love for all creation. It takes receiving the immense and ever-present love of God and resting in it, giving an eternal yes to God and his unfathomable love. We love, because God first loved us.
What hinders you from living in the knowledge and assurance of God’s love for you?
Respond to Jesus in prayer
Loving Lord, may my love overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help me determine what is best, so that on the day of Christ I may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through you, Jesus Christ, for the glory and praise of God. Amen.
Go and live obediently in the world, with mind and heart united in love.
