Prepare to listen. Light the 1st purple candle and pray: Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. (Ps 25:5)
Read: 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13
9How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? 10Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. 11Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. 12And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. 13And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.
Night and day Paul and his traveling companions pray for the church in Thessalonica. The prayer is intensely person, rooted in a deep concern for the spiritual well-being of this fledgling church. Night and day he prays to see them face to face; he prays for their faith to keep growing and their love for one another to keep increasing. Faith (as in total trust) and love are two of the most important virtues of the Christian life. They are always needed, in every culture, every political climate, every community. Night and day let us pray for growing faith and increasing love in Christ’s Church around the world as we journey through Advent.
There is much more in Paul’s prayer. What word or phrase got your attention? Continue to pay attention to it during today, listening for the Spirit’s leading.
Respond to Jesus in prayer
God our Father, you sent Jesus into the world so that we may know you and your salvation. Lead me to places and people today who will help grow my faith and increase my love for all peoples. Amen.
Go and live obediently in the world, where prayer happens night and day.
