Prepare to listen. Light the 1st purple candle and pray: Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. (Ps 25:5)
Read: Psalm 25:1-5
1To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul. 2O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. 3Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. 4Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths. 5Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.
The psalmist is very demanding! Three time his demands are negative, ‘Do not….’ And three times positive—make me, teach me, lead me. Each positive demand says the same thing in a different way, revealing a genuine desire to live life God’s way. ‘Make me know your ways, O LORD.’ Make me, I may not be willing sometimes, but I still want you to do your work in me. ‘Teach me your paths.’ They may be very different paths to the ones I would make. ‘Lead me in your truth, and teach me.’ There are so many out there teaching stuff that lacks the truth of God in it that we urgently need to pray to be led in God’s truth. May this Advent journey be one where you let God make you, teach you and lead you.
Think of a negative (‘do not’) and a positive request you would ask God for today.
